Backpacking Across Europe: Hostels

Greetings fellow wanderers! Since I last wrote about traveling throughout Europe, I figured that my next post should be focused on…hostels (dun da dun!). I know that there is a bit of controversy over the quality and security of hostels etc. But honestly most hostels are nothing to be afraid of. That is why it’s important that you carefully pick which hostel you are going to stay at.

The most important things to look out for in a hostel are the prices, facilities, location, and reviews. Of course hostels are going to the best option for those on a budget. Some prices for hostels range from €11 to €40 (about $14 to $50) a night depending on the type of room (dorm-style, private, single-gendered etc.) and the time of your visit. Of course camping is the cheapest option, but I’ll save that topic for another time ;).

For the facilities, there are a few key words to keep in mind: FREE WIFI, 24-hour reception, 24-hour security, breakfast included, free city maps, free walking tours, lockers, keycard access, kitchen, luggage storage, and no curfew. I found that the simplest way to find hostels was through Hostel Bookers and Hostel World. Both of these websites compare the rates for hostels, bed and breakfasts, and hotels, while including information about locations, facilities, and reviews. Another option is renting out apartments from locals in the city that you are visiting (airbnd).

The best part about hostels is that you don’t have to pay the full fee until you arrive (so you can always shorten or extend your time there). Also, most people who stay at hostels are usually young travelers who are looking to immerse themselves into new cultures, try new foods and customs, and most of all interact with other travelers.

So remember hostels are nothing to fear…so put on your dancing shoes and let the adventures begin!

Until next time, fellow travel addicts…
